Fraud costs Medicare an estimated $60 billion per year, affecting beneficiaries, families, and caregivers. This week, during Medicare Fraud Prevention Week from June 3-9, we focus on empowering you to prevent, detect, and report Medicare fraud. SMP Hawaii, a federally-funded, volunteer-based program managed by the Hawaii State Department of Health, is here to help.
Our mission is to “empower and assist Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers to prevent, detect, and report health care fraud, errors, and abuse through counseling, outreach, and education.” Each day this week, we’re sharing valuable tips to help you avoid Medicare scams and assist others in doing the same.
One of the most effective tools to combat Medicare fraud is the FREE Healthcare Tracker. Formerly known as the Personal Health Care Journals, these trackers help beneficiaries prevent, detect, and report suspected Medicare fraud, errors, or abuse. The Healthcare Tracker is now available in Chinese-Simplified, Ilocano, Japanese, Korean, and Tagalog, making it accessible to more people.
By using the Healthcare Tracker, you can keep a detailed record of your healthcare visits, services received, and medical expenses. This helps you compare your records with your Medicare statements to ensure accuracy and detect any discrepancies that could indicate fraud.
To learn more about preventing Medicare fraud, join us on Saturday, June 8, for a FREE online class from 10:00 – 11:30 am. This class will provide additional tips and tools to help you save Medicare and protect yourself and your loved ones from fraud.

Together, we can help protect Medicare from fraud and ensure it remains a vital resource for all beneficiaries. Use the Healthcare Tracker, stay vigilant, and report any suspicious activity to SMP Hawaii.
