One of the most common and frustrating types of scams today is the robocall. These prerecorded, automated phone calls can expose you to fraud, identity theft, and financial loss.
Here’s what you need to know to stay safe.
Robocalls are automated phone calls that deliver a prerecorded message. Some robocalls are legitimate — such as appointment reminders or emergency notifications — but many are illegal when used for selling products or services without your permission.
Over 50 billion robocalls were placed in 2021 alone, and scammers use them to reach as many people as possible with misleading or fraudulent messages.
Be cautious if you notice:
A clearly recorded message, especially one trying to sell you something.
Silence at the beginning of the call — a sign the system is waiting for you to answer.
A “person” whose voice seems off or responds awkwardly to your answers.
Urgent messages claiming your Social Security number has been compromised or that a payment is due immediately.
Calls about products you don’t own, like warranties for a car you no longer have.
Important:
Caller ID is not reliable — scammers can “spoof” numbers to make it look like a local or trusted number is calling.
Screen your calls: Let unknown numbers go to voicemail.
Don’t engage: Hang up immediately if you realize it’s a robocall.
Never press buttons: Even if prompted to “opt out,” pressing buttons may lead to more calls.
Don’t say “Yes”: Scammers may record your voice to authorize fraudulent charges.
Use call-blocking technology: Install apps or use carrier services that block known scam numbers.
Register your number: Sign up for the National Do Not Call Registry, but remember that scammers may still call despite it.
If you answer and realize it’s a robocall:
Hang up immediately.
Don’t respond to any prompts.
Don’t provide any personal information.
Report the call to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
