Hawaii DOH Urges Health Precautions After Hurricane Lala

As Hawaii residents clean up after Hurricane Lala, the state Department of Health is urging vigilance about the health risks that follow heavy rain, high winds and power outages. A statewide Brown Water Advisory remains in effect, so stay out of brown or discolored coastal waters and streams for 48 to 72 hours after the rain stops. Discard any food that touched flood water or rose above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, since refrigerated items last less than four hours without power. Avoid wading in floodwater and never drink from streams or ponds, which can carry the bacteria that causes leptospirosis. Drain standing water to control mosquitoes, address indoor mold promptly with protective gear and a bleach solution, and keep away from any electric or hybrid vehicle that was submerged until a certified mechanic inspects it. Seek medical care for wound infections, breathing trouble, stomach symptoms or fever after exposure, and remember that Hawaii CARES offers 24/7 mental health support by call or text at 988.
