5 Bank Account Scams to Watch Out For – Stay Safe, Kūpuna!

At SMP Hawaii, we work to protect our kūpuna and caregivers from fraud. Scammers are always coming up with new ways to get into your bank account — not by hacking, but by tricking you. Here are 5 scams to know and tips to stay safe:

1. Peer-to-Peer Payment Scams
Apps like Zelle or Venmo make sending money easy — and scammers take advantage of that. They may pretend to be from your bank and ask you to send money “to yourself,” which actually goes to them.

Tip: Don’t respond to suspicious calls or texts — call your bank directly using the number on your card.

2. Money Mule Scams
You’re offered a job to move money through your bank account. It may seem harmless, but it could involve laundering stolen funds — and you could get into legal trouble.

Tip: Never accept jobs or favors that involve handling someone else’s money.

3. Overpayment Scams
You receive a check or payment for too much, and they ask you to send the difference back. Later, their payment bounces and you’re left with the loss.

Tip: Be cautious when selling things online — don’t send money back unless you’re sure the payment is legit.

4. Account Takeovers
Scammers trick you into giving up your login details. Once inside, they can drain your account.

Tip: Use strong, unique passwords and set up multifactor authentication (MFA) for extra protection.

5. Automatic Payment Scams
You sign up for a free trial or offer, then find unexpected charges on your account.

Tip: Regularly check your bank statements or use an app to monitor transactions.
