2026 Medicare Fraud Prevention Week
From June 1-5, SMP reminds us to protect our Medicare number from scammers who target kūpuna.
Fraudsters rely on the fact that many times, people overlook charges on their Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) or Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from their health plan.
These statements are marked, “This Is Not a Bill” and list services that were charged using your Medicare number. It is important to confirm that you received the services billed.
One of the best ways to prevent Medicare from paying false claims is learning how to detect strange charges and reporting suspicious activity to SMP Hawaii, who can help to verify the information and refer to the appropriate authority.
Creating your online account on Medicare.gov allows you to see the claims that Medicare processed.
Learn how to spot red flags, use the popular Medicare Tracker App, and hear real SMP Hawaii stories.
